Our First Meeting!

August 21st, 2007

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to Georgia State this fall! This Thursday, August 23, the Alliance will be having its first meeting of the year! Like all of our fall meetings, this one will be in Lanier Suite in the Student Center at 7:00 pm. Join us as we get to know more about each other and meet our new members. We’ll also be talking about some of the big things the Alliance has coming up this fall. After the meeting, we’re going to keep dinner simple and go to Fellini’s.

Also, if you’re interested in joining the executive board for this year, be sure to send me an email with your name and the position you’re interested in (Activism, Volunteer, Education, or Social Chair) if you haven’t already, and be sure to be at the first meeting.

Good luck with classes this week, and we’ll see you Thursday night!

Sincerely,

Elijah Sarkesian

Elections!

July 30th, 2007

Hey, everyone!

School is starting back up for most of us in a few weeks, which means that the first Alliance meeting of the year is also coming up!  Right now, we are looking for people to join the Alliance’s executive board for the upcoming year.  Interested?  Keep reading…

We are looking for four people eager committed to making this year the best in the Alliance’s twenty-five year history.  The four positions open are: Education Chair, Activism Chair, Volunteer Chair, and Social Chair.  These four chairs will join our current board members (Elijah Sarkesian – me! – as Administrative Co-President, Cameron Bridges as Co-President of Programs, and Alan Copenhaver as Secretary/Treasurer) in what is already shaping up to be a landmark year for our organization.

To find out what the roles and responsibilities of each chair are, please visit our website at www.gsualliance.com and click on “Charter.”

If you are interested, please email me at esarkesian1@student.gsu.edu with your name and which position you’re interested in running for this fall.  We’re asking that submissions be turned in no later than August 28.  Please keep in mind that, should you decide to run for a position, you’ll need to be at the first three meetings (August 23, August 30, and September 6 – election day).

Thanks for your time, and look for more information about our first meeting in a few weeks!

Sincerely,

Elijah A. Sarkesian
Administrative Co-President

Good evening, everyone.  I just wanted to update everyone on what the Alliance is doing for Pride this year.

On Saturday, June 23, we will be volunteering for the Atlanta Pride Festival between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm.  We need three more volunteers to work either between 12:00-2:00 or 2:00-4:00.  If interested, please email me at esarkesian1@student.gsu.edu and let me know what time(s) you’re available.

On Sunday, June 24, we will be marching in the Pride Parade.  If you want to march with the Alliance, you will need to show up between 10:30 am and 12:00 pm by the MARTA Civic Center Station at the intersection of West Peachtree St. and Ralph McGill Blvd.  We will be meeting in Row E between Hoedowns and Swinging Richards.  The parade itself starts around 1:00 pm.  Again, if you have any questions, email me at the address above.

2007-2008 Exec Board Elections

April 12th, 2007
Good evening, everyone!  This evening, the Executive Board of the Alliance voted on changes to the Constitution for the Alliance for the rest of this year and for next year.  One of the significant changes concerns the Executive Board election, which has been pushed up from September to the end of this semester (April 26).

On April 26, we will be holding elections for the 2007-2008 academic year.  The following positions are open: Administrative Co-President, Co-President of Programs, Education/Activism Chair, Volunteer Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer.  Please visit www.gsualliance.com and click on Charter to see the duties of each position.

Basic requirements for election include undergraduate status and enrollment for Fall 2007.  Officers will assume their duties at the time of election and will hold the position for the summer and fall semesters (Co-Presidents will hold positions for the entire year).  Executive Board members should be present at a majority of Alliance meetings (every Thursday at 7:00 pm) and should be able to schedule weekly office hours.

If you are interested, please email me with a list of qualifications (previous experience, what you intend to do in the chair on the Executive Board, and your ideas for the Alliance in the summer and fall of this year) in the event of an actual race for a position no later than April 18.  Though not required, it is strongly recommended that all candidates are present at the April 26 meeting.

Sincerely,

Elijah A. Sarkesian

Whoring Virginity: Gay Culture and Sex

March 26th, 2007

Hello—

This week, in a sort of preparation for this weekend’s Unity Conference and its topic, we’re going to be discussing the concepts of virginity and whorishness in the LGBT community.  The meeting will be discussion-based, so come prepared to share your thoughts and ideas on the standards set by these two concepts and how they apply to the LGBT community.  For dinner, we’ll be heading over to Joe’s on Juniper.

Also…

For any of our graduate students, the new LGBT organization for graduate students, GradRights, will be hosting its first meeting this Friday at 6:00 pm at Manuel’s Tavern (602 N Highland Ave).  YouthPride is also hosting a college night every Tuesday night from 5:30 to 8:00 for students between the ages of 18 and 24.  For more information, please visit www.gsualliance.com.

Wednesday, the Alliance will be having another bake sale for Unity Conference.  Come out and send your friends out to help support the Alliance!
